About Roodeplaat

Built in 1956 and proclaimed a nature reserve in 1977, the Roodeplaat Dam lies just 22 km north-east of Pretoria and is the water-sport and birdwatcher's haven of Dinokeng. More than 250 bird species have been recorded across its savanna habitats — look out for osprey, purple heron, black heron and hamerkop — while a 7 km hike leads to two bird hides. Wildlife includes kudu, waterbuck, warthog, impala, blue wildebeest, duiker, steenbok and black-backed jackal. The southern part of the reserve is a picnicking, hiking, birding and game-viewing hub with a dedicated picnic and braai area along the shore, while the northern part is dedicated to boating, fishing (bass, carp, kurper and barbel), camping and water sports — from power boating, waterskiing and canoeing to restful fishing and sundowner cruises. It is also home to the biggest mountain bike park in Gauteng and an Olympic rowing course.
