About Dinokeng
One region, three worlds — where wildlife, heritage and water converge just north of Pretoria.
The Dinokeng Region
A place of rivers
One hour just north-east of Johannesburg and Pretoria lies the warm, big-sky region of Dinokeng — source of the world’s largest diamond and an area that sparkles with natural, cultural and historical attractions. The Greater Dinokeng Area, whose name means “a place of rivers”, is a region in northern Gauteng rich in natural, cultural and historical heritage, with over 120 activities to discover across its three hubs.
Dinokeng Game Reserve
Gauteng’s only free-roaming, malaria-free Big 5 reserve, just an hour north of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Spanning 21,000 hectares of bushveld, floodplain and thornveld, Dinokeng welcomed its first visitors in 2011 and is home to lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — plus cheetah, brown hyena, giraffe and the endangered blue crane. Explore two self-drive game routes, ballooning, bush walks and boat cruises.
Cullinan
This Victorian and Edwardian village, 30 minutes east of Pretoria, is where the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond — the world’s largest rough gem-quality diamond, now in the Imperial State Crown — was found in 1905, just 9 metres below the surface of the oldest diamond pipe on Earth. Today it offers working-mine surface tours, the Diamond Hub, oak-lined streets, museums, markets and excellent restaurants.
Roodeplaat
Built in 1956 and proclaimed a nature reserve in 1977, Roodeplaat Dam lies 22 km north-east of Pretoria and protects over 250 bird species and wildlife from kudu to waterbuck. The water-sport and birdwatcher’s haven of Dinokeng, it offers boating, fishing, canoeing, sundowner cruises, picnic and braai spots, bird hides — plus the biggest mountain bike park in Gauteng and an Olympic rowing course.
